U.S. juniors tee it up for the first time for their country

Washington, D.C. - On Saturday, January 16, 2004, the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration weekend, 32 juniors golfers tee'd it up for the first time in international competition during the Jimmy Garvin Grand Bahama Legacy International golf tournament. The excitement was clearly in the air. This tournament was a two-day, Ryder Cup style event.

The U.S. team qualified to participate on the team through the Fourth Annual Junior Masters Golf Tournament hosted by Golf Exposure, Washington DC based non-profit, at the historic Langston Golf Course in Washington, D.C. This event saw over 140 youth who were invited from as far north  as Connecticut to as far south as North Carolina. The Junior Masters is a sponsored exempt tournament - the youth compete at no charge.

Day one of the Jimmy Garvin Grand Bahama Legacy International golf tournament, was a four-ball  competition, which ended with the U.S. and the Bahamian teams tied at 4 matches apiece. In the windy conditions of day two, the format changed to individual match play where the  Bahamian juniors edged out the U.S. team 9 matches to 7. The Bahamian juniors golf team won overall 13 - 11. There was a display of great sportsmanship and mutual respect.

Jerel Whiting from Martinsville, Virginia led the U.S. boys team with a low gross of 172 and Deztany Jackson from Ft. Washington, Maryland and Jasmine Hughes from Trenton, NJ tied for the U.S. girls team low gross with a 188. The grudge match is scheduled to take place in June 2004, at Langston Golf Course, in Washington, D.C.
